The Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico for Sun & Fun

when to go to puerto rico

What’s the Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico?

It’s always a tough question when someone asks “when to go” since it depends what you’re looking for. For me personally, I love to visit in the shoulder seasons (to avoid crowds) and because the weather is milder. Prices aren’t sky high, but they’re not a bargain deal by any means.

If this is the way you like to travel too, I’d recommend visiting Puerto Rico from mid April to June, after the peak winter season and before the rainy season hits. Regardless when you visit, the island is always lots of fun so I put together this month by month guide to help you decide when to go to Puerto Rico!

The Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico for Amazing Weather

The island has its best weather – hot, sunny days with minimal rain – during the winter season. If you live in a cold climate, you’ll love the tropical sunshine of Puerto Rico from December to March!

Rainy season in Puerto Rico occurs from April to November while the main hurricane period occurs within that from June to November.

It often doesn’t rain all over the island at once, so you can maximize your visit to Puerto Rico in the rainy season by getting up early and shifting locations if you see a storm.

The Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico for Budget Travelers

Visit Puerto Rico in Fall, from September to October, if you’re looking for good deals. Hotel rooms will be at their all time low so you can get some really great deals on rooms! Rooms which cost over $350 in peak season can drop to as low as $80 a night!

This is also the cheapest time to fly to Puerto Rico as airlines want to fill flights. Many U.S. airlines offer direct flights from major cities and you can find fares for as low as $70 – 150 per person although routes may be more limited.

The Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico for Fun & Festivals

Puerto Ricans know how to celebrate! From late November to mid January, Puerto Rico is fun, fun and more fun. The end of Thanksgiving kicks off Christmas celebrations on the island and a vibrant winter season of one festival after another.

In December, there is Old San Juan’s White Christmas Festival, Puerto Rico Heritage Artisans Fair, the religious procession of Las Mañanitas and the dazzling light display at the Town of Bethlehem.

In January, this is followed by the Three Kings Festival and San Sebastian Festival, Puerto Rico’s version of Mardi Gras.

Expect twinkling lights, live music, open air parties and lots of fun during Puerto Rico’s festival period! We visited during the San Sebastian Festival, called ‘Sanse’ by the locals and loved the art fairs, street food vendors and parades.

Visiting Puerto Rico – Travel Checklist

Many U.S. airlines offer daily, direct flights from select US cities. We flew Jet Blue from New York City’s JFK airport. Puerto Rico is offering cheap flights to encourage visitors to the island – you can check for flight deals and routes here.

Traveling to Puerto Rico as an American citizen is incredibly convenient. All you need is your license, no passport required, as the island is a U.S. territory. Likewise, no need to bring a travel adapter, exchange currency or purchase a SIM card. American phones, dollars and plugs work just fine throughout the island.

As a result of Hurricane Maria, life in Puerto Rico has changed. We visited in mid January 2018 and found that electricity was up and running throughout the capital of San Juan. Select hotels and restaurants are open; we’ve listed the hotels we visited and used above. Check here for great deals on accommodation.

Lastly, be sure to visit Puerto Rico with travel insurance. Whether you get injured and need to be hospitalized, or your phone gets stolen, or an injury forces you to cancel all or part of your vacation, travel insurance will help when you need it most. I use and recommend World Nomads travel insurance.
