Korean Skincare for Thin Skin
After multiple trips to Korea, countless visits to the dermatologists and skin clinics and a small fortune on treatments, I’ve finally found what works for my thin skin.
So I’m sharing ALL the essential kbeauty skincare products, Olive Young products and korean pharmacy recomendations in today’s post!

First – my skin type.
I’ve found that identifying your skin type is crucial to finding the right products.
I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of watching all the Tiktoks/IG Reels on ‘must buy’ olive young products’ and spending way too much on products that weren’t suited for me.
The reality is, you have to get recommendations from someone with the same type of skin and skin concerns as you.
Otherwise, unfortunately the recommendations will just be a waste of money.
So let me go in-depth on my skin type and main skin concerns so you know if you'd also benefit from the same products…

I have thin skin
I actually didn’t know this until multiple korean clinic doctors mentioned this to me.
I think typically dry skin types tend to have thinner skin. I also believe skin thinness is primarily genetic.
If you see clear veins or you flush easily, most likely you also have thin skin.
Essentially, your skin barrier is much thinner and more sensitive than someone with thick skin. Thin skin types are more prone to getting fine lines and dehydration lines.
Thin skin can be thickened and improved through both in-office skin treatments and using the right at-home skincare products.

My top 2 skin concerns are improving my skin barrier thickness and hyperpigmentation
I’m really prone to freckles and moles.
I can lather on all the sunscreen in the world, but I tan incredibly easily. And over time, skin damage shows up as brown spots, freckles and moles on my skin type.
I also have large pores, especially on/around my nose and my cheeks. The skin in this area is red and sensitive and I have some broken capillaries on my cheeks.

So basically, my skincare routine I’m sharing below is focused on
- skin barrier repair
- combating hyperpigmentation
- for sensitive, dry skin types
If those are your concerns as well, this korean skincare guide should be useful!

What I don’t have
I don’t have thick skin, oily skin or suffer from acne.
I very rarely get pimples.
Surprisingly using tret gave me the most acne ive ever had, but i don’t typically get pimples. My skin is dry like the sahara, and pretty sensitive (i also bruise and bleed easily).
So if your main concern is acne hyperpigmentation, cystic acne or pitted acne scars, this guide most likely won’t be helpful.

Treating Sun Damage, Brown Spots, Moles and Pigmentation
I’ve found that the easiest, fastest, best way to get rid of hyperpigmentation is in-office treatments.
I’ve done two rounds of laser in Asia. This got rid of 99% of my freckles, brown spots, moles and pigmentation issues.
It was by far the best money I’ve ever spent on my face.
I've written lots of travel guides to Seoul, like how to plan the perfect ‘glowup' here as well as a fun girl's trip itinerary here.
And while we’re on the topic of derm visits, i personally feel you shouldn’t waste your money with chemical peels or multiple rounds of pico.
Find a doctor that understands your skin (especially if you have darker skin tones) and go straight to heavier duty lasers for actual effective results.

Best Skincare for Preventing Pigmentation
Now, post laser, with all my pigmentation issues taken care of, my skincare routine is focused on maintaining and preventing new sun damage from occurring.
Basically, this means religious sunscreen usage and hydroquinone. Hydroquinone requires a prescription from a dermatologist in the US, but is available over the counter in Korea at pretty much any korean pharmacy.
You can also buy it online here.

Hydroquinone
There are 2 brands of hydroquinone widely available in Korea: Domina and Melanosa.
Domina
The original brand of hydroquinone that older generations of Koreans are familiar with.
Produced by Taeguk Pharmaceutical, it’s the long-standing classic and the brand your mother’s generation uses for decades and swears by.

Melanosa
A much newer, more recent brand to the market. Made by Dong-A Pharm, they’ve captured a big share of the industry by offering the same core ingredient at half the price.
Melanosa is the brand I’ve personally used. They offer 2 options, a 2% hydroquinone cream and a 4% hydroquinone cream.
The lower strength option is designed for gentle skin brightening and treating mild dark spots, acne scars or uneven skin tone.
I started straight with the 4% and found it super effective! The higher strength formula targets deeper, more stubborn hyperpigmentation, melasma and age spots.

Using melanosa 4% hydroquinone gave me skin a really even, glowy lit-from-within look.
If you’re worried about the dosage or sensitivity, you could try starting with the 2% first but if you have normal skin or lots of pigmentation issues, I’d recommend the 4%.
(Plus they cost the same)

How to Use Hydroquinone
Some people use hydroquinone as a spot treatment just on their dark spots, others apply to their whole face.
Personally, I use a thin layer all over my entire face and neck. It gives me this incredible bright, even glow.
Since my skin is sensitive, I don’t apply hydroquinone everyday. I will use melanosa 2-3x a week, at night, for two months at a time.
Note: Hydroquinone must be cycled – you should not use this long term.
It’s recommended to use for 3 months on and 3 months off as it can cause permanent discoloration marks if not cycled!
Uninterrupted, long-term daily use of hydroquinoine raises the risk of exogenous ochronosis, a rare condition that causes permanent blue-black or gray-blue skin darkening.

How to Treat Thin Skin
To improve thin and fragile skin, I’ve learned that barrier-supporting products are key.
By incorporating skin-barrier focused products in your skin routine, you can better lock in moisture, reduce inflammation and protect the skin’s structural matrix.

Skincare Ingredients to Look For
There are a couple key ingredients to incorporate:
- Ceramides: lipids that act like the mortar between your skin cells to rebuild the outer protective layer
- Niacinamide: to boost overall barrier function and calm irritation. Keep this at a low concentration, 5-10%
- Hyaluronic acid and glycerin: humectants that pull water into the epidermis to plump up the skin
- Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Petrolatum or Glycerin: occlusives and balms to lock in all the moisture and shield the skin
- Squalane & Plant Oils: Lightweight, non-irritating emollients (like jojoba or argan oil) that soften brittle skin texture
- Peptides: all the rage these days, peptides tell your skin to make more collagen
- PDDN and PDLLA: cutting edge Korean pharmacy-grade skincare ingredients to repair and stimulate the skin to produce more collagen. Best when injected but still helpful in daily creams!
