The North Face Snow Pants

I’ve been on the hunt for flattering, functional snow pants and bibs

Surprisingly, they’re hard to find! And… they’re not cheap.

So I set out to try ski and snowboard clothes from all sorts of brands.

I tried everything from affordable brands, to popular name brands and even designer ski fashion brands, to see if I could find the perfect pair. Did a cute affordable ski pant exist? Do designer ski pants hold up to actual skiing?

I’m doing quick reviews and first impressions of every ski pant and bib that I try. All the reviews are here if you want to search by brand.

Today’s review is of The North Face Freedom pant.

The North Face Review

The North Face is a pretty popular American sporting goods brand.

You’ve most likely bought a jacket or two from them – I remember when Denali fleece jackets were all the rage as a kid!

In my mind, the company makes outdoor clothes and jackets that people mostly wear as streetwear… so I didn’t realize they made proper ski clothes at first.

They have a small but curated collection of snow pants and ski bibs. I picked up two pant styles to try out, one a more slim-fit ski pant and one a more relaxed, cargo-style snow pant.

The North Face Freedom Insulated Pant

The North Face Freedom pant is offered in both men’s and women’s. The men’s version is extremely popular, so I had high hopes for the women’s option!

Fit

the-north-face-freedom-insulated-pant-review

The North Face Freedom ski pants are a high rise, relaxed snow pant.

They’re designed like a loose fitting cargo pant. I thought the fit was just a touch baggy for my liking, but they’re a nice insulated option if you’re looking for a fleece-lined snow pant.

The athletic style means they also fit comfortably over base layers.

I especially like one design feature that I’ve only seen on The North Face ski pants.

They have velcro strips on either side of the waist band so that you can adjust the fit. I’d recommend getting your usual size, or 1 size up if you’re in between, and then using the velcro ties to get a tighter fit.

I wish all snow pants had this feature!

The eased legs are a roomy (but not sloppy) style and would be great for snowboarders or skiers who want freedom of movement on the slopes.

Fabric

womens-north-face-freedom-pants

Like a traditional snow pants, the Freedom pants are made from a thick waterproof outer material and are lined with cozy fleece on the inside.

They’re a heavy weight ski pant that can block out high winds and wick away rain or snow.

The pants come in a ton of different colors but I opted for the balsalm green, a gorgeous muted teal green color.

Sizing ranges from XS to 2XL and you can select from 3 different inseam lengths: short, regular and tall. I’m wearing the XS in regular for reference.

The material is made from double layer DryVent, so it’s both waterproof, highly durable and breathable.

The insulation is made of 60g of compressible Heatseeker synthetic insulation, so with an added base layer of thermal underwear, you should stay warm and dry in these!

Pockets

These snow pants are designed like a cargo pant, with tons of helpful pockets.

You have two zippered hand pockets at the waist, where you can keep small items. There’s also a large velcro pocket on the right leg for extra storage.

Legs

The inner thighs of the pants legs have vents, to release extra heat if you get warm.

The pants legs are relaxed throughout, with zippers on the hems to slide over your boots.

Like all great snow pants, they have gaiters on the inside with elastic grips to keep out snow, and reinforced kick patches for extra durability.

The North Face Freedom pants are very reasonably priced, at around $150. For all the features these pants have, that’s quite a good value, especially compared to other ski and snowboard brands!

Overall, I thought The North Face Freedom insulated snow pants were high quality and great value! If you like a relaxed, cargo style ski pant with lots of pockets, I'd check these out.
