Hi everyone!

Wanted to check in with a little travel and beauty update! I’ll be traveling extensively over the next two months and am currently in the midst of spring cleaning, packing and all around organizing. Now that the weather is getting warmer, I’m slowly putting away the winter sweater and pulling dresses, shorts and tank tops out of storage.

I thought it would be the perfect time to write a summer beauty post. Shaving used to be one of the most dreaded parts of the transition to spring since I shave daily. But, over the years, I’ve discovered some tips and tricks to ensure hair-free legs and arms in a pinch. With the right prep, shaving doesn’t have to be time consuming and can be as quick as 2 minutes!

Springtime Shaving Tips

1 | Always shave at the end of your shower (or bath)

Use time in the shower to exfoliate the skin with a scrub to slough away any dead skin cells. Then, shave at the end, when you’re almost done with your shower. That will give time for the shower’s hot steam to open up the skin’s pores and soften the hairs throughout, allowing you to shave easily and achieve a closer cut.

2 | Shave in the direction of hair growth

…to avoid razor burn, redness and rashes! This is one that took me by surprise when I first learned of it, as I always thought shaving against the hair growth resulted in a smoother shave. It may but it also increases the likelihood of nicks, cuts and irritation. If you have sensitive skin, avoid shaving upward completely.

3 | Don’t Share Razors

Whatever you do, don’t share a razor with a friend, roommate, or significant other. Razor blades can transfer bacteria if used across multiple people.

Also make sure you’re using a clean, sharp razor. I like Pure Silk’s premium disposable razors as each razor has a pivoting head (to easily shave your knees and underarms) and ultra thin, open flow blades that allow for easy cleaning. There’s nothing worse than debris and muck stuck in a rusted old razor and I find it extremely convenient that Pure Silk offers premium disposable razors for travel.

4 | Always use a shave cream

…as a prep product when your legs are wet, as the lubrication will help provide a closer shave. If you’re sensitive to fragrances and alcohol, try Pure Silk shave cream. The formula is rich and luxurious, staying on your legs without melting off in the moist shower environment, and has a light fruity scent that’s pleasant but not overpowering. If you like to apply scented lotion or perfume, don’t worry – the shave cream doesn’t linger post shower.

Pure Silk offers 7 different shave cream scents and options and I particularly like the dry skin one. The best part about Pure Silk Shave Creams is that the bottle is rust proof!

5 | Maintain your shave by letting the skin heal

This means avoiding the pool, hot tubs and the beach. Hot water can irritate freshly shaved skin while bacteria and chemicals from hot tubs and pools can cause ingrown hairs, redness and other forms of irritation. Also try to avoid laying out in the sun. Instead try to shave a day or two before any beach days and your skin will thank you.

Shaving on the Go – Travel

For travel, I usually bring disposable razors and travel-sized shave cream. I used to use cheapie disposable razors bought by the bulk but after too many trips where the razor handles broke before I even reached my destination, I knew I needed something better.

I recently discovered Pure Silk’s premium disposable razors, which have 6 blades and lubricating bands with Aloe, Vitamin E and chamomile to help calm and protect the skin. I was testing out Pure Silk’s Contour 6 razor and premium disposable razors at the same time.. and I almost couldn’t tell a difference! They both offer a multi-flex design to ensure the closest, smoothest shave I’ve ever had – let me know what you think of them! Above is what’s going in my Europe beauty carry-on pouch.

I used to purchased Pure Silk all the time. I can’t remember why I stopped using it. I always had a good experience with it, and I will have to use it again soon.

I never knew that you should shave in the direction of growth. I’ve been doing the opposite my entire life, and I do get bumps and knicks. I’m going to have to try it the other way! We have a can of Pure Silk in our shower right now. :)

Great tips. I too dread the shaving process and have considered laser hair removal a number of times. But then I talk myself out of it and hit the ol’ razor again and again haha. I completely agree with having a good shaving cream. It makes a WORLD of difference. I live in the dry desert so I need all the added moisture I can get. Thanks for sharing and have a great time on all your travels!

I love the Pure Silk shaving creams – definitely more bang for your buck! I like using disposable razors when I travel – it is easy to just toss out when I’m done.

I remember when my close friend’s son began shaving. Being a single mom, she tried to teach him to shave and he ended up with such bad razor burn on his face, since she was teaching him to shave against the grain. Seems like that’s how all of us ladies do it– I had no idea we shouldn’t!

I read an article before about the proper way of shaving your legs. And it is exactly what you’ve said here. Woman needs a soft and smooth skin esp. this summer. Having a great product to use to keep our skin healthy and soft is so important.

These are all worthy shaving tips. I have to admit that I often borrow my hubby’s razor because mine is dull or rusted. I also then to use it long past it’s life. It only results in cuts. Ouch!
