Best Mules Shoes
What are mules shoes you ask?
Mules are open backed, closed toe shoes and actually derive from a French word. The shoe style was popular as an indoor shoe during the 18th century and is recently making a comeback.
Mules can be any heel height, but I particularly love flat mules. They’re comfortable, simple and sleek and as most come with a pointy toe, I like how mules make your feet look slimmer.
You can also find mule shoes for women with pretty embellishments (I’m partial to bows) and fun prints, fabrics and textures.

Top Mules Shoes for Women!
Most Versatile Mules Shoes: Sam Edelman
What I love most about these Sam Edelman mules is how effortlessly they turn a simple concept into ridiculously versatile loafers.
The leather upper conveys sophistication and style while the synthetic lining, cushioned footbed, and synthetic outsole all create a comfortable fit that is often lacking from typical, rigidly-constructed mules.
As a bonus, the tri-color block scheme instantly creates matching opportunities with an incredibly diverse palette of potential outfits!
Best Leather Mules: Everlane
Everlane makes high quality Italian leather shoes – at a great price point.
These simple loafers have a lightly cushioned insole and buttery soft leather outer. They’re backless, but thanks to their fit, you don’t have to worry about them flying off your feet as you walk.
In fact, they feel like walking on clouds!
If you’re looking for a long lasting mule that you can pair with everything, check out the Everlane option. I’d suggest sizing up 1/2 a size, as they run a little narrow.
You can read my in-depth review here, with photos of the mules on.
Most Low Heeled Mules: Nisolo
Nisolo makes ethically made leather shoes in Peru.
This style of slip-on leather mule is one of their best sellers, and for good reason! They’re super comfortable, fit true to size, and the almond shaped toe helps elongate the legs.
The stacked wood heel keeps the shoe casual, while the deep leather shades are versatile enough to match with any outfit.
Most Dressy Mules Shoes: Steve Madden
Wear white sneakers, and sure, you might just be hitting the gym or running a quick errand.
Wear any other white shoes, and you’re immediately making a sophisticated fashion statement.
These mules shoes from Steve Madden are my go-to whenever I need elevated style from my open-backed shoes. The mini-stacked heel and rounded toe will help make your legs look toned and slim, while the simple design – accentuated by the vamp’s metal accent – effortlessly makes your outfit that much classier!
Most Comfortable Mules Shoes: Birkenstock
Not all mules shoes have to be super formal. In fact, I’ve realized that countless mild-weather outfits are perfectly complemented by deliberately casual mules.
That’s why the Birkenstock mules truly offer the best of both worlds.
The legendary Birkenstock footbed ensures that these mules offer a durability scarcely found in traditional mules shoes, which are often culprits for blisters, foot pain, and a generally stiff fit.
While most Birkenstocks are little more than the footbed and a few straps, these mules are lined with ridiculously soft shearling, which creates not only a super comfortable fit, but also a cute, casual, and laidback vibe!
Most Luxurious Mules Shoes: Hush Puppies
This might be hard to believe, but formal events don’t legally require you to wear high heels.
No, really. They don’t.
Sometimes I have no greater wish than taking a break from stilettos, which is why having the Hush Puppies mules shoes has been such a game changer for me.
Built with a cement frame and complemented by a rubber outsole, memory foam insole, and cotton-twill lining, the Hush Puppies mules feature the perfect combination of durability and comfort.
Aside from quality craftsmanship, I am also obsessed with everything about the Hush Puppies style, including a slimming pointed toe, high-quality leather and suede fabrics, and a range of bright, bold colors!
