Pearl of the Adriatic

“those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and find it” – George Bernard Shaw

I was looking forward to Dubrovik the most out of all the cities on my Eastern Europe tour and it definitely didn’t disappoint! Yes, the water is actually that blue and yes, you can kayak / lay on the beach / cliff jump and yes its actually that pretty! Southern Croatia is the vacation playground of the Mediterranean and my stay there was all about relaxation, the summer sun and the pool. In the Middle Ages, it was an independent maritime port, strong and wealthy enough to rival Venice. The city suffered damage during the Croatian war of independence but the Old Town feels worlds away from the modern world and retains its gorgeous architecture of hidden alleyways and magnificent churches. I didn’t stay in the Old Town itself, but a short drive/bus ride away at Hotel Lapad. I also spent a day climb the city walls- its an exhausting 3 or 4 hour trek around the entire Old Town but its got some great views and is where I took the majority of these snaps. It’s also a great workout!

I wish! I just have a love for travel and photography and a very dry day job at the moment. Maybe one day I’ll be able to make the transition :)

    Hi Sher,

I came across your space while researching for my trip to Dubrovnik. Your photos look amazing! They just add on to the excitement that is already building up.

I wanted to ask you for your recommendations on activities in Dubrovnik, and the length of your stay. Also, is staying outside of Old Town a good choice?

I love to sightsee and trek/hike while taking in what the city has to offer. I look forward to hearing from you on your suggestions!

Thank you and have a great weekend! (:

Hi Cheryl, thanks for stopping by! Definitely get excited, Dubrovnik was one of my favorite stops in Croatia. I stayed at Hotel Lapad, which is a quaint hotel / house outside of the old town, about 5 minutes away by bus (link is above in the post). I really liked the hotel and don’t think you need to stay inside the Old Town itself. The Old Town is very very touristy and tends to get flocked with tourists during peak hours and then pretty much everyone leaves at night.

Activity wise – walking above the old town walls is a great activity. You get an amazing view of the sea, the boats and the city itself. If you decide to go all the way around, it’s also a great workout, especially in the heat (takes about 3 -4 hours if you stop to take photos along the way). You can also find a beach to lay out on, or take a boat out on the water. There’s some great restaurants within the Old Town itself where you can have some seafood paella with a view right on the water. If you’re into game of thrones, there are also some tours that will show you where certain scenes where filmed, etc. In general though, the Old Town is a self contained fort so you can just wander and get lost.

I stayed in Dubrovnik for 3 days and that was perfect! Even if you only have 1 day, I think you can cover everything in the Old Town, just depends if you want an extra day to go to the beach or kayak perhaps.
