You Are What You Eat

I don’t think I ever truly believed that saying until I watched the ‘Chef’s Table’ documentary on Netflix, which profiled six different world-renowned chefs. Episode 2 featured Dan Barber and his restaurant Blue Hill, right in my backyard in NYC. He wanted to produce a spicy egg yolk for one of his courses and, by feeding his chickens a diet of red hot peppers, their yolks came out a fiery red orange! If you don’t believe me, check out this photo of what the raw yolk looks like from a just cracked egg.

Beauty and Skincare Ingredients Matter Too

It’s not just food, skincare products are absorbed into the body and have an impact as well. Nowadays, I’ve been trying to buy skincare products based on their ingredients and not just their pretty packaging. I have really been focusing on acid-based products (lactic acid, AHA, BHA, vitamin C, etc – maybe I’ll do a follow-up post on that) to get rid of any hyper-pigmentation spots and then following up with very hydrating creams and oils for my super dry skin.

As I get older I find that my skin gets increasingly drier so hydrating products are KEY. If they have anti-aging or brightening properties, so much the better! I recently discovered the brand Tula and tested their Exfoliating Treatment Mask and Hydrating Day & Night Cream and was really blown away by both.

Tula Skincare Review

Tula skin care was founded by Dr. Roshni Raj, a board certified gastroenterologist and internist with a medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine. Using her knowledge of the digestive tract’s healthy bacteria, she created a skincare line derived from probiotics (milk and yogurt extracts); nutripeptides (from hydrolyzed rice); vitamins A, C, and E; Antioxidents (tumeric, white tea and blueberry extract); and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (from wild flax oil).

The ingredients certainly sounded promising but the real test is the products themselves. I found the Tula Exfoliating Mask to be a light, spreadable mask with small exfoliating beads. More importantly, the Tula version was much more hydrating than typical clay or mud masks, which are too drying for my dry skin type. I assume the moisturizing properties of the Tula exfoliating mask are due to the probiotic extracts. I like to “customize” the mask to my problem spots and coat just my nose and chin area where I’m prone to acne. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes and then wash off! The formula is creamy enough where I feel refreshed and clean yet my face still retains enough moisture.

My favorite is the Tula Hydrating Day and Night cream. It’s a thick, souffle like consistency, almost as if you made banana bread and substituted yogurt or apple sauce instead of butter – still rich in flavor but much lighter in texture! The cream is extremely hydrating and yet not oily or greasy so it’s great for daytime use when I don’t want to look like a greaseball. My skin is extremely dry so I constantly need to reapply moisturizing creams and I’m so happy that I now have a perfect everyday, 2x a day cream to use.

My Daytime Skincare Routine

My current morning routine is to cleanse with the Sunday Riley balm, apply the Tula day and night cream, do a quick spritz of the Avene thermal spring water for extra hydration, apply Biore physical sunscreen and then a light layer of the Sunday Riley facial oil to lock everything in. Then my skin is perfectly hydrated to brave NYC’s chilly windy streets!

Sephora is currently having a holiday set featuring half size versions of the Sunday Riley Good Genes and Luna oil in one set, which is an awesome deal. I stocked up on two! Also, use code TULA15 to get 15% off your first purchase of all Tula skin care products.

Ooh this is my first time hearing about the use of probiotics in skincare. I’ve been taking probiotics to rebalance my gut after taking antibiotics for the flu, so I know how wonderful they are! Sounds like a cool product to try :)

The yolk was red indeed! Amazing.

I haven’t really given much thought about beauty products yet because I always worry about my budget. That whatever I buy, they should fit my budget. But maybe it’s time that I become more careful about the products I use since I am now in my 30s.

If I ever get my hands on that Tula Skin Care, I would sure love to try it.
