Amazon Prime Day 2018

Amazon Prime Day 2018

Amazon’s biggest sale of the year is almost here! In the days leading up to Prime Day (and the day of), we’ll be keeping track of all the best deals across tech, home, kitchen & fashion right here.

What is Prime Day on Amazon?

Amazon Prime Day started in 2015 as the company celebrated its 20th birthday by cutting prices on hundreds of products. Now 3 years in, it’s one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Amazon goes to town.

The sale extravaganza is a bit like Black Friday in that there are massive sales on nearly every product category – from TVs to home appliances, to health and beauty.

When was prime day 2017?

The sale typically happens around the second week of July, but the date isn’t set in stone. Prime Day 2017 saw discounts on everything from Samsung TVs to Vitamixes and of course, hefty discounts on Amazon’s own products like the Amazon Echo and Amazon Fire tablet.

Each year, the company ups the ante so we’re expecting bigger and better deals for Prime Day 2018.

When is Prime Day 2018?

The sale date is still under wraps. But, a leaked banner seems to indicate Prime Day 2018 will start at 12pm PST on July 16th, 2018 and last for 36 hours. Hooray for a full day and a half of discounts!

To take advantage of the deals on Amazon Prime Day, you have to be an Amazon Prime member. Prime membership comes with unlimited one-day shipping, on-demand Prime Video and Prime Music streaming services, plus you can borrow 1 free book per month from Amazon’s Kindle Lending Library.

The nice thing is Amazon typically offers a subscription deal right before Prime Day rolls around, so you can save on the monthly cost.

How to Get the Best Deals on Prime Day

To avoid overspending, go in with an idea of what you want. Add any items you’re interested in to your basket, and Amazon will let you know if the price has changed since you added it to your shopping cart.

Amazon Prime Day Tips:

  • New deals will be posted every five minutes for the duration of Prime Day
  • Download the free Amazon App and turn on alerts
  • But use your desktop for purchases. Amazon’s app is great for browsing and finding upcoming deals, but I find it easiest to navigate on my large screen
  • If you aren’t a Prime member yet, what are you waiting for? Sign up for a 30-day free trial here
  • Make sure your Prime account personal and shipping information is correct and updated – deals come and go quickly
  • Do a price check! Lots of other stores have started sales on Prime Day so check Macy’s, Nordstrom, Best Buy and Kohl’s to quickly compare

Amazon will offer the biggest savings on their own products like Fire tablet, Fire TV Stick, Kindle and Amazon Echo. But we also expect thousands of deals on tech, gadgets, gaming, beauty, fashion and home.

Amazon Giveaways

Last year, Amazon hosted daily giveaways as part of a countdown for Prime Day 2017. Each day you just click the giveaway link, watch a quick video and then tap to see if you’ve won. Past giveaways included a Nintendo Switch, an Amazon Echo, a Samsung Home Theater System, an Apple iPad mini, a Nikon D3400, a PlayStation 4 Slim, an iRobot Roomba and an Apple MacBook.

Can’t wait till July? Don’t worry, Amazon drops daily discounts on their site as part of their lightening deals.

What are Amazon Lightning Deals?

Some deals will be fixed for the entire 36 hours of Prime Day. But others will be temporary “Lightning deals”, available only until they’re sold out. These are premium deals that you can find throughout the site that have to be offered at 20% or more off the current price and the sale must be greater than $5 USD.

Depending on how popular the item is, that could be anywhere from a couple minutes to an hour. If something does sell out, you can click “join the waitlist” since some people inevitably change their minds and end up not buying. You’ll get an alert on the upper right hand corner of Amazon.com’s desktop page if the product becomes available when you’re on the wait list.

If you have an Alexa, you can ask her to reveal some Prime Day deals early! Last year she gave a cryptic poem to anyone who asked…

We’ll be live tweeting the best lightening deals over on our Twitter, if you want to see a live feed when deals go live.
